6717 Arabis L.

Notes: Numerous molecular and phylogenetic studies in the last ten years (e.g., Koch et al. 1999, 2000, 2001) demonstrate that Arabis, even when excluding Arabidopsis (incl. Cardaminopsis) and Turritis, is polyphyletic. There are two only distantly related branches: the predominantly Eurasian Arabis s. str. with, e.g., A. alpina (lectotype of the genus), A. borealis, A. hirsuta, and A. pycnocarpa (American), and the North American Boechera with, e.g., B. divaricarpa, B. drummondii, and B. holboellii. The latter branch is more closely related to Arabidopsis and Turritis. This main structure is repeated in analyses of several gene sequences and with several methods and seems robust. We accept Boechera.
