Geography: Circumpolar-alpine.
Notes: The two major races, subsp. hyperboreus and subsp. arnellii, differ morphologically (see Nilsson 2001a) but are parapatric and with transitional forms, e.g., in coastal northern Norway. Subspecies tricrenatus occurs only locally within the ranges of the others. It is provisionally accepted for reasons given below.
