2715 Dactylorhiza Neck. ex Nevski

GBIF

Notes: Dactylorhiza is a complicated genus distributed mainly in Europe and the Mediterranean region. Only a few species touch the Arctic. Due to extreme polymorphy and frequent hybridization, a daunting number of species and races have been described and named over times (close to 600 names for species and subspecific taxa are included in the International Plant Names Index, IPNI). Combined morphological and genetic investigations assign the variation found in northern Europe to about four species (Bateman and Denholm 1983; Hedrén 1996a, 1996c, 1996d, 2001; Hedrén et al. 2001; Pedersen 1998, in prep. Flora Nordica, in comment). We apply a broader circumscription of species than done in the majority of current European works. There is still a lack of correspondence between the treatments in the Nordic countries and in European Russia.
