2n= 18 (2x). - Europe (N), Siberia (N), Far East (N), Alaska, Canada, Greenland. - Numerous reports, partly for Matricaria ambigua or Tripleurospermum ambiguum.

Geography: Circumpolar: ICE NOR RUS SIB RFE ALA CAN GRL.

Notes: Elven and Solstad: A survey of northern European, Siberian, Chukotkan, Alaskan, Canadian, and Greenlandic material (ALA, AMNH, BG, CAN, DAO, ICEL, O, TRH, TROM, and field collections) indicates that the majority of native arctic plants from these regions belong to subsp. phaeocephalum, some to subsp. subpolare.

The Icelandic material (AMNH, ICEL) contains some plants that conform to subsp. phaeocephalum in the features of involucral bracts and ligulas, mainly from the non-arctic Reykjavik area in the southwest but also from the arctic island of Grimsey in the north.

The name Matricaria ambigua, often applied for arctic plants (especially in North America), belongs to a different, central Asian species.
