- Scop., Fl. Carniol., ed. 2, 2: 35 (1772). - Nomen novum for Bunias cakile L., Sp. Pl.: 670 (1753). Described from Europe, Africa, and America. Lectotype (LINN): Herb. Linn. 847.5a, right hand specimen (Elven in Jonsell and Jarvis 2002: 68). See that publication for rejection of the lectotype designated by Rodman (1974): Herb. Linn. 847.6. Our lectotype assigns the name to a widespread western European plant.
Geography: European.
Notes: Four races are recognized within Cakile maritima in northwestern Europe: the widespread but non-arctic western European subsp. maritima, the more restricted non-arctic western European sandy foreshore specialist subsp. integrifolia (Hornem.) Hyl. ex Greuter & Burdet, the mainly Baltic and southwestern Scandinavian subsp. baltica (Jord. ex Rouy & Foucaud) Hyl. ex B.W. Ball, and the northern subsp. islandica that reaches the Arctic.
