Not included: A report of 2n = 28 from "North America" (Löve 1954b for A. crispa var. sinuata in an untrustworthy paper). For some reason, Löve assumed A. crispa s. str. to be European despite it being described from Canada.
Geography: Amphi-Pacific: RFE ALA.
Notes: Many Russian authors have regarded the Pacific Russian Far East plants a species or subspecies apart from subsp. sinuata, as subsp. kamtschatica or as Alnus (Alnaster) kamtschatica (e.g., Czerepanov 1966). Note, however, that also subsp. sinuata was described from (partly) Kamtchatka. Löve and Löve (1975a) synonymized Alnus kamtschatica with subsp. fruticosa. The relationship seems to be much closer with subsp. sinuata as stated already by Hultén (1928) with regard to Kamtchatka. At that time, he considered "sinuata" and "kamtschatica" to be different but recognized "kamtschatica" from Alaska. He stated categorically that only one taxon of the group is present in Kamtchatka. Hultén (1944) moved towards fully synonymizing them and argued against an taxon "kamtschatica". Hultén (1968a) mapped his A. crispa subsp. sinuata throughout coastal northeastern Asia to include all of Kamtchatka. This implies that he finally synonymized them even at level of subspecies. We follow his opinion. If subsp. kamtschatica is accepted, its arctic range is as rare in South Chukotka.
