580235 Salix hastata L.

2n= 38 (2x). - See subspecies.
Not included: A report of 2n = ca. 100 from Kolguev, European Russia (Sokolovskaya and Strelkova 1960) should be checked against voucher, if there is any. The species is otherwise only known as diploid.

Geography: European - Asian (N/C) - amphi-Beringian.

Notes: Elven and Argus: Three races of Salix hastata are currently accepted in northern Europe (Rechinger and Akeroyd 1993a; Hämet-Ahti et al. 1998; Elven and Karlsson 2000; Elven et al. 2005). Subspecies vegeta is southern and does not approach the Arctic, subsp. hastata is widespread in Europe and reaches the Arctic at least in Norway and northwestern European Russia, and subsp. subintegrifolia is considered to be the major northern Eurasian race eastwards from northeastern Norway. It is not decided whether the last-mentioned race should encompass all the plants of northeastern Asia and northwestern North America.
