Geography: European - Asian (W): (NOR) RUS SIB.

Notes: Ribes spicatum subsp. lapponicum is present in the Borderline Arctic in Norway. The distribution in Russia has been revised from Gladkova (PAF proposal) and now follows Gladkova (1984a).

Russian authors prefer to apply the name R. glabellum (Trautv. & C.A. Mey.) Hedl., Bot. Not. 1901: 98 (1901) [R. rubrum var. glabellum Trautv. & C.A. Mey. in Middend., Reise Sibir. 1, 2, 3: 40 (1856)], based on a plant from the Okhotsk area in the Russian Far East, whereas northwestern European authors mostly apply the Scandinavian name subsp. lapponicum. The name subsp. lapponicum was published by Hylander to replace the name R. glabellum for northern European plants. He considered the name R. glabellum misapplied to both northern European plants and to the main body of Siberian ones. We should not take it for granted that these two names refer to the same plant. Subspecies lapponicum is currently not accepted to occur as far east as the Okhotsk area from where R. glabellum was described.
