490101 Ribes spicatum E. Robson

GBIF

2n= 16 (2x). - Europe (N, C). - Several reports, the majority or all for subsp. spicatum.

Geography: European - Asian.

Notes: For northern Europe, Gladkova (1984a, PAF proposal) accepted Ribes glabellum (with R. spicatum subsp. lapponicum as synonym) and R. hispidulum. However, the name R. glabellum may not be relevant for a European species (see below). Northwestern European authors rather include the native northern European plants in R. spicatum and have found it more appropriate to treat the variation as three or more parapatric subspecies. Elven in Jalas et al. (1999) mapped fertile intermediates between R. spicatum subsp. spicatum and subsp. lapponicum to be frequent in Norway. We suspect it is the same with R. hispidulum (considered by Hämet-Ahti et al. 1998 a subspecies together with subsp. spicatum and subsp. lapponicum).

Subspecies spicatum approaches the Arctic in coastal Norway but mainly in transitions towards subsp. lapponicum, and thus is has not been included in the Checklist.
