- Hultén, Acta Univ. Lund., n. s., sect. 2, 40, 1: 696 (1944). - Silene acaulis f. subacaulescens F.N. Williams, J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 36: 101 (1896). Described from Colorado and Arizona (U.S.A.).
Geography: Amphi-Beringian - Cordilleran: RFE ALA CAN.
Notes: The boundary between Silene acaulis subsp. acaulis and subsp. subacaulescens in northern Asia is clear. It is less clear in North America. Hultén (1968a) mapped both races throughout Alaska and East Chukotka. The material we have studied rather indicates a limit along the Mackenzie River.
The subsequent combination S. acaulis subsp. subacaulescens C.L. Hitchc. & Maguire, Univ. Wash. Publ. Biol. 13: 22 (1947), is superfluous (K. Gandhi in comment).
