24 (2x). - Europe (N, C), Russia (N), Far East (N), Alaska, Canada, U.S.A., Greenland. - Numerous reports.
Geography: Amphi-Beringian - North American - amphi-Atlantic - European (N/C) - Asian (NW).
Notes: There is a significant gap of about 100 longitude in Siberia between the broadly amphi-Atlantic and the broadly amphi-Beringian parts of the range of Silene acaulis. Beringian and Cordilleran plants differ from the amphi-Atlantic ones in several features in leaves and flowers, summarized by Morton (2005c). These Beringian-Cordilleran plants have been proposed as a separate race, subsp. subacaulescens. Molecular evidence so far does not clearly support two taxa but we accept them (provisionally).
