This taxon was accepted as a variety by Soreng et al. (2003) but not included in the synonymy of Pavlick and Anderton (2007). Subspecies or var. arctica is sometimes separable from B. pumpelliana s. str. in northwestern North American material but a very large part of the material (ALA) is transitional in the reported diagnostic characters. See also Hultén (1968a) and Cody (1996).
