330704-06 The Eleocharis mamillata aggregate E. erythropoda, E. macrostachya, E. mamillata

Geography: Disjunct circumboreal.

Notes: Hultén and Fries (1986) mapped this aggregate as a group of allopatric and parapatric taxa, based mainly on Strandhede's survey: Eleocharis mamillata s. str. in Europe and perhaps in central Asia, E. austriaca Hayek (E. mamillata subsp. austriaca (Hayek) Strandh.) as regionally sympatric but locally allopatric with E. mamillata s. str. in Eurasia, E. mamillata var. cyclocarpa Kitag. in eastern Asia, and E. macrostachya Britton in North America. Only E. mamillata s. str. and E. macrostachya are documented to reach the Arctic. See, however, Ball's comment below where he believes E. mamillata and E. macrostachya belong in different relationships.
