Geography: Circumboreal?: ALA.
Notes: Eleocharis mamillata reaches the Arctic in the Noatak River valley, northern Alaska, and has several near-arctic localities.
Ball: Smith et al. (2002) recorded this species from the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories and it occurs in northern Ontario but south of the arctic parts. Smith et al. reported it as subsp. mamillata, and the Ontario specimens seen are also subsp. mamillata (based on European descriptions).
Elven: The majority of Alaskan specimens north to the southern Brooks Range belong to subsp. mamillata, with fairly pale brown scales and low, broad stylopodia. The specimens from the two northwesternmost Alaskan localities (within the Arctic) differ in much darker scales but are immature and cannot be identified to subspecies with any confidence. We provisionally assign them to subsp. mamillata.
