Geography: Circumpolar-alpine.
Notes: Kirschner: In addition to subsp. parviflora there are two subspecies: subsp. fastigiata which reach the Arctic in the Beringian regions (and erroneously reported under the name subsp. divaricata by Hultén), and subsp. melanocarpa confined to the eastern part of North America, perhaps also to be included among arctic plants.
