Geography: North American (NE) - amphi-Atlantic - European - Asian (W): CAN.
Notes: Dryopteris carthusiana reaches the Arctic on Hudson Bay. It has often been reported from the Arctic in European Russia and northwestern Siberia (e.g., Tolmachev 1960) but no confirming specimens have yet been seen (LE, NS, NSK). Danilov (1988d) excluded the species from the Arctic in Siberia.
Montgomery and Wagner Jr. (1993) considered D. carthusiana an allotetraploid from the diploids D. intermedia (Muhl. ex Willd.) A. Gray from eastern North America and the Atlantic islands and a yet unknown or extinct species D. "semicristata" that also is presumed to have participated in the formation of other allopolyploids.
