- F.W. Schultz & Sch.Bip., Flora 45: 426 (1862). - Hieracium aurantiacum L., Sp. Pl.: 801 (1753). Described from "Syria, Helvetia" "Syria" probably a misprint for "Stiria", i.e., Steiermark in Austria; the microspecies is not known from Asian Syria. Type not designated (Jarvis 2007: 571).

Notes: Pilosella aurantiaca reaches the Arctic as a garden escape (subsp. aurantiaca), persisting at least by vegetative means in localities in Iceland and Norway. A native subspecies, subsp. carpathicola (Nägeli & Peter) Soják, occurs in non-arctic parts of Scandinavia. The referred chromosome numbers are only two among many reported for this species or group of microspecies: 2n = 18, 27, 30, 36, 45, 54, 63.
