8644 Stenotheca Monnier
- Monnier, Ess. Monogr. Hieracium: 71 (1829).
- Chlorocrepis Griseb., Abh. Königl. Ges. Wiss. Göttingen 5: 155 (1853).
Notes: Sennikov and Illarionova (2002) and Sennikov (PAF proposal, comments) accepted Pilosella (see below) and Stenotheca apart from Hieracium. An additional argument - besides several morphological features - is the assumed full sexuality of Stenotheca. Strother (2006b) included the species below in Hieracium. Whereas Hieracium is predominantly western Eurasian and amphi-Atlantic, and Pilosella Eurasian, Stenotheca is American (north and south). Two phylogenetic studies (Gaskin and Wilson 2000, plastid DNA sequences; Fehrer et al. 2007, plastid and nuclear DNA sequences) show similar structures with mainly a tri-partition: one main branch with Pilosella and the Mediterranean-Macaronesian genus Andryala L, a second with Eurasian Hieracium, and a third with American "Hieracium", i.e., Stenotheca. All groups (except for Andryala) were kept inside Hieracium by these authors. Bräutigam and Greuter (2007) presented the arguments for acceptance of Pilosella as genus and the same ones can be forwarded for Stenotheca.
