8643 Askellia W.A. Weber

Notes: Elven and Murray: The two fairly closely related species previously named Crepis elegans and C. nana have the base chromosome number of x = 7, different from x = 4-6 in Eurasian Crepis and x = 11 in North American Crepis. They are characteristic morphologically and were recognized by Weber (1984), together with some relatives, in the genus Askellia. Bogler (2006) included Askellia in Crepis without comments and also without synonyms. However, there are good morphological and cytological arguments for Askellia. Askellia got good support as a monophyletic clade outside Crepis in the molecular study of Enke and Gemeinholzer (2008) and the morphological study of Enke (2008).
