Geography: Amphi-Atlantic (E) - European - Asian (W).

Notes: Korobkov and Elven: Korobkov (PAF proposal) accepted two species: Cirsium heterophyllum as the North Atlantic plant in southwestern Greenland, northern Fennoscandia, and Kanin-Pechora, and C. helenioides as the one in northeastern European Russia and Siberia from Polar Ural to Taimyr. Many western and northern European authors have considered them one species (e.g., Werner 1976; Elven 1994) but not all. A separation on one mainly European and another mainly Siberian race could be an alternative but we have not found relevant combinations. If considered species, the name of the second species is a problem. Talavera and Valdés (1976) interpreted the designated type of C. helenioides (L.) Hill, Hort. Kew.: 64 (1768) [Carduus helenioides L., Sp. Pl.: 825 (1753), described from "Anglia, Sibiria", lectotype (LINN): Herb. Linn. 966.36 (Airy Shaw 1938: 825)] to belong to a hybrid between C. heterophyllum and C. rivulare (Jacq.) All. Cirsium rivulare is a more southern European species not reaching northeastern Russia or Siberia. The name C. helenioides is not available for the eastern part of C. heterophyllum s. lat.
