Notes: Subspecies sornborgeri has been proposed as a race confined to eastern Canada in Quebec, Labrador, and Newfoundland. Even those North American authors who have recognized several subspecies have been reluctant to accept this one and have rather included it in subsp. angustifolia. Löve and Löve (1975a) referred three chromosome counts for it (as Arnica sornborgeri). Their sorting is suspect as they considered it to have 2n = 76 vs. 2n = 57 in the others they recognized. Both numbers are present in several of the proposed races, and one of their referred reports assigned to A. sornborgeri is obviously misplaced as it is from Søndre Strømfjord in western Greenland (Böcher and Larsen 1950) and must belong to A. angustifolia s. str. The Löves have (again) manipulated the original data.
