Geography: Amphi-Beringian: RFE ALA CAN.
Notes: Male and female plants are equally frequent in subsp. monocephala; sexual. This is a comparatively narrowly distributed Beringian taxon with a major range in northwestern North America, mostly in the Beringian (unglaciated) parts west of the Mackenzie River, and with some localities in Chukotka.
Antennaria philonipha is reported almost only from within the range of subsp. monocephala in Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and the westernmost Northwest Territories and is stated to hybridize with it (Porsild and Cody 1980). Petrovsky (1987c) and Bayer (1993, 1996, 2006) included it in A. monocephala s. str. We should accept some polymorphy in this sexual race.
Antennaria exilis was described from within the range of subsp. monocephala in St. Paul Island. Already Hultén (1937) doubted it as a taxon. Bayer (1993): "Antennaria exilis is a pubescent form of A. monocephala subsp. monocephala, but there is intergradation between ... this form and the typical glabrous form. Therefore, it does not seem warranted to give taxonomic recognition to the two forms".
