Notes: Subspecies arctica (Solidago compacta) is mainly or entirely a tetraploid as suggested by Löve and Löve (1975a). Its diagnostic characters need specification. It may be restricted to East Chukotka and western and southwestern Alaska. Comparing Chukotkan plants (where only subsp. arctica should occur) with Alaskan plants, we suspect that a much larger part of Alaskan plants than currently assumed should be assigned to this subspecies, if it is accepted. If the limit between the two subspecies runs along the ploidy line, as suggested by Löve and Löve (1975a), all the western North American plants may belong to subsp. arctica, but then it would be problematic to specify differential characters towards the more eastern plants.
