2n= (1) 16 (2x). - Siberia (N), Alaska, Canada. - At least five reports for "interior" and "interioroides".

Geography: Asian (N) - amphi-Beringian - North American (N): SIB RFE ALA CAN.

Notes: Elven: Hultén (1971a) mapped Pedicularis sudetica subsp. interioroides as very widespread from northwestern Siberia east to Hudson Bay, whereas he mapped subsp. interior as restricted to northwestern North America. He did not include subsp. gymnostachya in his considerations. Molau and Murray (1996) included subsp. gymnostachya in P. interior. Subspecies gymnostachya is reported from Siberia and the Russian Far East. The report of a tetraploid chromosome number for it, in this otherwise diploid group, should be checked against voucher. Molau and Murray included also subsp. interioroides in their concept of P. interior. It is reported from Siberia, the Russian Far East, and tentatively from Canada. Löve and Löve (1982b) reported a chromosome count under this name from Churchill on Hudson Bay, i.e., as arctic in Canada.

Ivanina: Molau and Murray (1996) united subsp. interior, subsp. interioroides, subsp. gymnostachya, and subsp. jacutica. Revision of herbarium collections from northern Asia (Siberia, the Russian Far East) has shown that in the arctic part of the territory subsp. interioroides dramatically predominates, whereas subsp. interior is widespread outside the Arctic (especially in the Far East).

Elven: Murray still argues for a merger of subsp. gymnostachya and subsp. interioroides into P. interior. We accept the merger for the Checklist pending further investigations.
