810208-09 The Castilleja hyperborea aggregate C. hyperborea, C. pseudohyperborea

Notes: Rebristaya: Castilleja pseudohyperborea differs from C. hyperborea in the absence of flavescent pubescence and in corolla tinged pink (not yellow). Records by Hultén (1968a) and Porsild and Cody (1980) of C. hyperborea from Chukotka refer to C. pseudohyperborea.

Yurtsev: The plant [Castilleja pseudohyperborea] was found in 1992 near Kileak Lake on the Seward Peninsula. Alaska is therefore added.

Murray and Elven: Castilleja pseudohyperborea may be too similar to C. hyperborea to merit rank. The morphological variation in western Alaskan C. hyperborea is rather large (including "absence of flavescent pubescence and corolla tinged pink"), often within populations. Yurtsev's recognition of two species in western Alaska is not surprising if he based it on these features. We have reidentified as C. hyperborea the Seward Peninsula plants (ALA) that Yurtsev refers to above as C. pseudohyperborea and therefore reduce Yurtsev's addition to this comment. We suspect that this aggregate in the future will be reduced to one species (or variety).
