GBIF

Notes: The species group around Swertia perennis has a very disjunct range throughout montane and alpine regions of Eurasia and western North America. Hultén (1968a) as well as Cronquist et al. (1984) considered it one polymorphic species. Russian authors have usually accepted several species (Kharkevicz 1995b with two species for the Russian Far East; Zuev 1997 with five species for Siberia). Swertia perennis s. str. then becomes mainly European, described from "Helvetia, Bavaria" in central Europe. Lectotype (LINN): Herb. Linn. 327.1 (Barrie in Jarvis et al. 1993: 92).

The majority of reports of chromosome counts for this group are of tetraploids (2n = 28) from southwestern, central, and eastern Europe, Japan, Colorado, British Columbia, and Alaska.
