760202 Gentianella amarella (L.) Börner

Geography: Circumboreal.

Notes: A similar seasonal and regional variation is found in Gentianella amarella as in G. campestris. The type subspecies - subsp. amarella - reaches the Arctic in European Russian and Norway, probably in its aestival variety. The regional race that reaches the Arctic in Iceland is the same as in the British Isles and in southwestern Norway: subsp. septentrionalis. The Asian, North American, and Greenland subsp. acuta is another major regional race and Hultén (1968b) accepted var. acuta and var. plebeja (Cham. & Schltdl.) Hultén as seasonal varieties. The reports of diploids from Siberia and North America might be an argument for acceptance of G. acuta as a species apart from the tetraploid G. amarella (subsp. amarella and subsp. septentrionalis), in addition to morphological differences.
