Geography: Circumboreal-polar.

Notes: Elven: Several authors have proposed two races at the same ploidy level within Vaccinium vitis-idaea (e.g., Hultén 1968a; Vinogradova 1980; Malyschev 1997). Intermediates have not yet been documented in areas where they meet but the reported diagnostic features are few and quantitative (mainly size of plant, leaves and fruits, best reported by Malyschev 1997). In a molecular analysis (AFLP data, Alsos et al. 2006), few if any differences were found between subsp. vitis-idaea and subsp. minus in general, whereas the eastern Canadian plants (within subsp. minus in current taxonomy) differed appreciably from the others. Vander Kloet (2009) did not comment on the variation.
