Notes: In several papers Löve and Löve have proposed to separate this species in its own genus Chiogenes. Their justification was mainly a difference in base chromosome number (x = 12 vs. x = 11). However, all the counts supporting x = 12 were made by the Löves and differ from the few counts made by others and which conform to other Gaultherias. Trock (2009) accepted only 2n = 22 and included this species in Gaultheria.
