Notes: The closely related Cordilleran subsp. saximontana (Small) A.E. Porsild reaches north to the non-arctic parts of Alaska and the Yukon Territory. A study based on AFLP markers (Eidesen et al. 2007) suggested that subsp. saximontana is 'sister' to the circumpolar subsp. tetragona. The study also suggested some interesting phylogeographic patterns concerning the Asian or Beringian origin of this circumpolar plant.
