740105 Rhododendron tomentosum (Stokes) Harmaja
- Harmaja, Ann. Bot. Fenn. 27: 204 (1990). - Ledum tomentosum Stokes, Bot. Mater. Med. 2: 502 (1812). Probably no type existing (Harmaja 1990).
Geography: Circumboreal-polar.
Notes: Hultén and Fries (1986) mapped their Ledum palustre subsp. palustre (= Rhododendron tomentosum s. str.) from Europe and western Siberia, their subsp. decumbens from northern Fennoscandia throughout Eurasia and North America to western Greenland. The two subspecies thereby become sympatric in northern Europe and southern Siberia. Yurtsev's PAF proposal reflected this view. We are reluctant to accept that the two races (both tetraploid) overlap to this extent and suspect some confusion between subsp. decumbens and dry heath ecotypes or modifications of subsp. tomentosum in some regions. A survey of northern Eurasian material (S, i.e., Hultén's main herbarium, O, TROM) indicated co-occurrence of subsp. tomentosum and subsp. decumbens in northern Asia from Yamal across the Jenisei, Taimyr, and northern Yakutia to Chukotka, but not in northern European Russia or Fennoscandia.
