672701 Subularia aquatica L.

Geography: Circumboreal.

Notes: Murray, Mulligan, and Elven: We follow Mulligan and Calder (1954) and accept two subspecies of Subularia aquatica, one mainly Eurasian and one North American. Hultén (1968a) stated the two subspecies to be weakly characterized and also that the plants from Alaska and the Yukon Territory were difficult to assign. Rollins (1993) discounted reports of subsp. aquatica from North America as did Al-Shehbaz (2010c). We disagree with both conclusions. We have studied a northwestern North American material (ALA) and find the races fairly well defined and easy to recognize in this area, following the characters emphasized by Mulligan and Calder (1964) and Holmgren et al. (2005). Subspecies aquatica constitutes the majority of the American Beringian specimens, whereas subsp. americana is restricted to the southern coast of Alaska west to the Togiak Lake area.

The chromosome numbers reported are uncertain; 2n = 30 might be the only number. See Taylor and Mulligan (1968).
