2n= (1) 26 (2x, x = 13). - Europe (N, C), Russia, Asia (S). - At least five reports, e.g., Nurmi (1980) from southern Finland, Geltman (1984) from Russia, and Lövkvist and Hultgård (1999) from southern Sweden: Öland.
(2) 48 (4x, x = 12?). - Europe, Russia, Siberia. - Numerous reports.
(3) 52 (4x, x = 13). - Europe, Russia, North America. - Numerous reports.
Löve and Löve (1975a) reported only 2n = 52 for U. dioica s. str., neglecting that the majority of previous counts (including at least two their own) were of 2n = 48. These may be slight miscounts and a repetition of the number found in the 1920s, but not necessarily as there also are several fairly recent counts of this number from reliable sources. However, Woodland et al. (1982) rejected the reports of numbers based on x = 12 (e.g., 2n = 48) as technical artefacts.
Not accepted: A report of 2n = 36 from Austria (Dobes and Hahn 1997) should be re-checked.

Geography: European - Asian (W): ICE* NOR* RUS* SIB* GRL*.

Notes: Urtica dioica s. str. occurs in the Arctic as at least archaeophytic in northern Europe and as an established adventive throughout northwestern Europe, European Russia, and southern Greenland.
