641031-34 The Potentilla gorodkovii aggregate P. gorodkovii, P. subgorodkovii, P. vahliana, P. sp. "Quebec"
- The Potentilla nivea aggregate x the Potentilla uniflora aggregate
Geography: Asian (N) - amphi-Beringian - North American (N).
Notes: Yurtsev, Elven, and Murray: Also for this group Elven and Murray now deviate from Yurtsev's PAF proposal and comments but in a way that Yurtsev may have approved. Elven and Murray have therefore edited comments into a joint statement.
The four taxa, three named and one unnamed, have the general morphological appearance of the Potentilla uniflora aggregate but differ in presence of floccose hairs on the pubescence on petioles and other parts, slightly more numerous and less triangular-acute leaflet teeth, mostly more than one flower per stem, and styles dilatate basally and glandular. These features (especially the floccose hairs) point towards some relations with the P. nivea aggregate. Our hypothesis is that these taxa originate from crosses between taxa of the two mentioned aggregates. Primary or close to primary hybrids are very common, mostly clearly intermediate, and they do not constitute consistent groups in the material we have inspected. All the four taxa listed below are much closer in general appearance to their assumed parents in the P. uniflora aggregate and occur in large populations with a morphological consistency over large and continuous ranges. We assume that much stabilization has taken place, possibly effected by back-crossing with their assumed parents from the P. uniflora aggregate, and that these taxa are acceptable (hybrid) species. They are mostly counted with higher chromosome numbers than their assumed parents in the P. uniflora aggregate.
