Ertter, Murray, and Elven: The material currently assigned to P. litoralis is polymorphic and may contain at least two species: P. litoralis s. str. and an unnamed plant especially widespread in Alaska and the Yukon Territory (Ertter in Ertter et al. 2011).
The name P. virgulata A. Nelson type: U.S.A.: Wyoming, Mammoth Hot Springs, 20. July 1899, leg. A. Nelson 6011 has often been applied to northern material but seems to belong to a much more southern species.
