2n= (1) 28 ca. 30 (4x). - Russia (N), Siberia, Asia (C). - Several reports, a northwestern Russian one for P. arctica.
(2) 42 (6x). - Russia, Siberia, Asia (C). - At least three reports.
Not included: An old report of 2n = 14 (2x) of uncertain identification (Tischler 1929). A report of 2n = 28 (4x) from Wrangel Island (Zhukova and Petrovsky 1971, for P. multifida s. lat.) was transferred by Zhukova and Petrovsky (1985b) to P. anachoretica.

Geography: Disjunct circumboreal.

Notes: Soják (2005) presented a good key to the Potentilla multifida aggregate. Potentilla multifida L., Sp. Pl.: 496 (1753), was described from Siberia, southern European Russia, and Turkey. In its strict meaning (see, e.g., Soják 2005), it does not reach the Arctic even if it reaches far north in Fennoscandia as does its relative P. arctica Rouy in Karelia in European Russia. The two species that reach the Arctic are the Asian P. tergemina as adventive and the amphi-Pacific and North American P. bimundorum as both native and adventive. Both are reported to be tetraploids and are assumed to be sexual.
