630902 Lathyrus palustris L.

GBIF

Geography: Circumboreal.

Notes: Two subspecies of Lathyrus palustris are proposed: subsp. palustris and subsp. pilosus. Authors report their ranges differently. Hultén (1968a) mapped subsp. palustris in Europe, western and central Siberia, and also in eastern North America; subsp. pilosus in eastern and western North America, throughout northern Asia, and isolated in a part of northern European Russia. Hultén and Fries (1986) mapped the same general pattern in Eurasia but assigned all northern North American plants to subsp. pilosus. Kurbatskij (1994b) accepted both races for Siberia but as overlapping and possibly intergrading. Yurtsev (PAF proposal) reported subsp. palustris only from northwestern Canada (and with 2n = 42) and subsp. pilosus from all of Eurasia and northeastern Canada (and with 2n = 14). The type of L. palustris is European and all counted European plants have 2n = 42. In lack of a better alternative, the last treatment of Hultén is chosen. He based his opinion on a large material throughout the range. In the material we have studied, the only difference we find between the subspecies is in absence or presence of some pubescence. The morphological difference may be too small, and too intermixed geographically, to justify two races if not supported by a ploidy difference.
