630701-02 The Hedysarum boreale aggregate H. dasycarpum, H. mackenziei

Geography: Asian (NE) - amphi-Beringian - North American.

Notes: Elven, Murray, and Solstad: Yurtsev (PAF proposal, comment) considered the mainly North American Hedysarum boreale and the northern Asian H. dasycarpum two closely related but different species, the former with H. mackenziei as a northern vicariant species, the latter with var. depauperata as a northern race. Hultén (1968a) considered H. boreale and H. mackenziei "doubtfully distinct". Geographically they are separated by a gap in northern Asia between the Anyui Mountains and the eastern Chukchi Peninsula (Yurtsev 1986). We have compared Siberian and American material and accept two species in a H. boreale aggregate.

Hedysarum boreale Nutt., Gen. N. Amer. Pl. 2: 110 (1818), with type: U.S.A.: "around Fort Mandan, on the banks of the Missouri" probably North Dakota, leg Nuttall, is a more southern species.
