Geography: American Beringian: ALA CAN.

Notes: Murray and Elven: The majority of North American botanists (e.g., Cody 1996) have regarded Oxytropis jordalii to be an Alaskan and northwestern Canadian mountain race of O. campestris (subsp. jordalii). Hultén (1968a, 1968b) regarded it as a closely related American counterpart to O. sordida but that is erroneous according to Porsild and Cody (1980) and also in our opinion. Yurtsev regarded it to be a good, local diploid species of eastern Alaska and the Yukon Territory and not part of, strictly speaking, the O. campestris aggregate. The diploid supposition is countered by the reports above. Murray does not accept Yurtsev's assignment of his diploid report (it belongs to O. varians). The investigations of Jorgensen et al. (2003) gave some support to O. jordalii and O. varians as two species (see below). Also we find O. jordalii and O. varians different, at least morphologically. Iif treated as two subspecies within a species, that species should be O. varians and not O. campestris. Transitions between O. jordalii and O. varians are not suggested even if the two have largely overlapping ranges.
