Geography: Asian (N/C): SIB RFE.

Notes: Czerepanov (1966) about Betula extremiorientalis: "This species ... is very weakly differentiated morphologically and unlikely to merit the rank of species; it is a race of the highly polymorphic B. humilis Schrank ..." (translated in Tolmachev et al. 2000). Yurtsev commented that B. extremiorientalis should be included in B. humilis, perhaps as a race. Shemberg (1992) accepted B. fruticosa Pall. to be the priority name for a widely circumscribed species also including B. humilis and B. extremiorientalis. We have not received any opinions for or against that proposal.
