2n= (1) 28 (2x). - Gram et al. (1941).
(2) 42 (3x). - Far East (N). - Probatova and Sokolovskaya (1989).
(3) 56 (4x). - Far East (N, S). - Kodama (1967, 1970); Gurzenkov (1973).

Geography: Asian (N): (RFE).

Notes: Nedolushko (1996a) did not map subsp. hirsuta from any part of Chukotka but Hultén and Fries (1986) mapped it as a major Asian race extending into the Anadyr basin and approaching the Arctic in South Chukotka.

This is the only northern Alnus reported with higher ploidy levels than 2x, and 4x may be the more frequent level. This may influence the evaluation of its rank, as subspecies or species. Löve and Löve (1975a) omitted the reports of tetraploid counts, all known at their time.
