Notes: Hedberg (1992: 387) selected the following lectotype for the name Saxifraga propinqua R. Br. 1819: Canada: the Northwest Territories?, Melville Island the Winter Harbour area, leg. Sabine (BM). This specimen is not admissible as type. It was collected on Captain W.E. Parry's first expedition to explore the Northwest Passage, wintering on Melville Island (and turning there) in 1819-1820. These collections, which Brown (1823) treated, were not available before 1821. Brown (1819) described S. propinqua on material collected during Captain John Ross' "Baffin's Bay" expedition in 1818 to northeastern Canada and Greenland. This name must therefore be based on an earlier specimen (type) than the one designated by Hedberg (1992).
Subspecies propinqua is, according to Hedberg (1992), a Nearctic race from East Chukotka throughout arctic North America to northwestern Greenland.
