Geography: North American: CAN.
Notes: Wolff and Jefferies (1987a, 1987b) described Salicornia borealis as a local species on Hudson Bay. Ball commented that S. borealis is not any longer considered sufficiently different from the more widespread North American S. rubra. Ball (2003) synonymized S. borealis with S. rubra but with the comment that the northern plants in the Yukon Territory and on Hudson Bay shared one unique feature not known in other North American Salicornia: many of the plants branch at the cotyledonary node. Similar neotenic features characterize also the northern S. dolichostachya subsp. pojarkovae compared with the main species (see below) and may be an ecotypical reaction in the northernmost populations. Synonymizing S. borealis and accepting S. dolichostachya subsp. pojarkovae may therefore not be fully consistent.
