430101-02 The Chenopodium album aggregate C. album, C. suecicum

Geography: European - Asian - North American (W).

Notes: The two species Chenopodium album and C. suecicum are superficially similar in gross morphology and often confused. They differ cytologically and in some constant, taxonomically significant morphological characters, especially in pollen and in seed shape and surface. Uotila has studied this group extensively and concludes that C. album and C. suecicum are distinctly different morphologically and genetically (e.g., Uotila 1974, 2001a). They are obviously two species. The previous collective treatment makes it, however, problematic to assign many earlier records to species. This especially concerns immature arctic specimens as the main diagnostic differences are found in inflorescence and seeds.
