421212-18 The Gastrolychnis group

Notes: Petrovsky, Murray, and Elven: We treat the arctic parts of the Gastrolychnis or Physolychnidium group as two aggregates: the Silene uralensis and the S. involucrata aggregates. This is in agreement with recent molecular evidence (Popp et al. 2005), demonstrating that at least the main parts of the S. uralensis aggregate constitute a primary lineage, whereas the S. involucrata aggregate has originated from hybridization and polyploidization events between the predominantly diploid S. uralensis lineage and the diploid S. linnaeana lineage, resulting in tetraploids and hexaploids.
