421212-15 The Silene uralensis aggregate S. soczavana, S. uralensis, S. violascens, S. wahlbergella
Geography: Circumpolar-alpine.
Notes: Petrovsky, Murray, and Elven: Compared with the Silene involucrata aggregate (below), the S. uralensis aggregate is characterized by, e.g., broad-winged seeds and hidden or only shortly emerging, usually lilac or pale violet petals. Morton (2005c) included the arctic North American plants in one species (S. uralensis) with three subspecies. We treat the parts of the aggregate that reach the Arctic as four species: the diploid Scandinavian S. wahlbergella, the diploid Asian S. violascens, the diploid and widespread Eurasian and North American S. uralensis, and the tetraploid amphi-Beringian S. soczavana (the last-mentioned including Morton's S. uralensis subsp. porsildii). The main problems are found in the infraspecific variation of S. uralensis.
