2n= 72 (4x). - Europe. - Numerous reports.
Sokolovskaya and Strelkova (1960) reported a triploid chromosome number of 2n = ca. 54 from the Khibiny Mountains in the Murman area, northwestern European Russia. Löve and Löve (1975a) assigned this count to Cerastium hyperboreum. Cerastium hyperboreum (with type from Svalbard) is a synonym of C. arcticum, absent from the Murman area as is the related C. nigrescens. The voucher specimen (if one exists) should be inspected before this count is accepted. It is more in accordance with a hybrid C. alpinum (2n = 72) x C. cerastoides (2n = ca. 38), also known from other places and between two species present in the Murman area.
