Notes: Some plants from the interior Varanger Peninsula in arctic Norway differ disjunctly from the otherwise fairly frequent subsp. aquaticus in the region. We assign them with strong doubts to subsp. protractus. Morphologically, they rather conform to subsp. insularis as described but the distance to the reported range of that race is large and we have not had any Russian material of it available for inspection. If the Varanger Peninsula plants are identified as subsp. insularis, it strengthens the arguments for recognition of at least a subspecies. These plants are transitional to R. arcticus in several features, giving some support to Tolmachev's hypothesis above. Reports of R. arcticus from the Kola Peninsula may pertain to similar plants.
