2n= (1) 120 (12x). - Canada (E). - Löve (1986, but see below).
(2) 140 (14x). - Canada. - Mulligan (1957); Taylor and Mulligan (1968).
(3) 160 (16x). - Canada. - Degraeve (1975); Löve and Löve (1982a).

Löve and Löve (1975a) reported this species to be only 14-ploid. The several numbers - mainly counted or reported by the Löves themselves - indicate that this may be an unwarranted simplification.

Geography: Amphi-Pacific - North American: CAN.

Notes: Mosyakin (2005) discussed the variation in Rumex occidentalis and suggested that the western North American plant cound merit recognition as a regional race: subsp. fenestratus (Greene) Hultén, Circumpolar Pl. 2: 132 (1971) [R. fenestratus Greene, Pittonia 4: 306 (1901); described from near Comox on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada]. This taxon does not reach the Arctic.
