2n=
(1) 42 (6x). - Siberia (N), Far East (N). - Veselukhina (1976). Hexaploid in FCM, Solstad (2009, seven plants from two localities).
(2) 8x. - Siberia (N). - Octoploid in FCM, Solstad (2009, four plants from four localities).
Not included: Several chromosome number reports assigned to subsp. orientale: 2n = 42 (6x) from northern Yakutia, mainland Chukotka, and Wrangel Island (Zhukova and Petrovsky 1971, 1976, 1977, 1980, 1985a; Zhukova et al. 1977) and 2n = 56 (8x) from mainland Chukotka, Wrangel Island, and central Alaska (Zhukova and Petrovsky 1971, 1985a; Dawe and Murray 1979). In our revised circumscription of P. lapponicum, none of these reports can be assigned to any part of that species.
Geography: Asian (N): SIB RFE?
Notes: Numerous specimens from Taimyr and northern Yakutia were assigned in the AFLP analysis to Papaver lapponicum subsp. orientale, the only race of the species accepted from Taimyr by Tolmachev (1975a). Our data suggest that subsp. orientale and subsp. jugoricum co-occur in Taimyr and northern Yakutia but that neither these nor any other part of P. lapponicum reach farther eastwards. We find no support for a broad range of P. lapponicum (or P. radicatum) throughout northeastern Asia and northwestern North America as reported by, e.g., Rändel (1974) and Petrovsky (1999).
Papaver minutiflorum, described from eastern Yakutia, belongs in our opinion within P. lapponicum subsp. orientale (as also suggested by Petrovsky 1999). The often very small-flowered plants from northern Yakutia were placed within this cluster by the AFLP markers (Solstad 2009).
